Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, told the Louisville Courier Journal on Tuesday that the stand-alone postal bill “could open the opportunity for discussion about something smaller than what the speaker and the Democratic Senate leader were insisting on at the point of impasse.” He explained that “he’s open to calling the Senate back to Washington if Democrats are willing to budge the total price tag on another round of stimulus spending.” Mcconnell said that “all parties agree an additional stimulus package is needed; however his disagreement with the Democratic leadership is on how much to spend.” He explained how “hopefully they can overcome these partisan passions that are getting in the way and come together to do what’s needed for the American people,”

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Tuesday that Democrats in Congress are willing to cut their coronavirus relief bill in half to get an agreement on new legislation. Pelosi said, We have to try to come to that agreement now.” She explained how “we’re willing to cut our bill in half to meet the needs right now and then they can come back again in January to discuss more stimulus.” Pelosi also said she did not want to wait to reach a deal at the end of September, when Congress will need to agree on funding to keep the government open during the next federal fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1. Pelosi’s spokesman Drew Hammill later said that she was referring to previous offers to meet Republicans “halfway, not cutting our bill in half.”

Treasury Secretary Mnuchin spoke about the state of second stimulus package and democrats coming back to the negotiating table on Tuesday on CNBC. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Tuesday criticized top Democrats for what he categorized as stubborn tactics and a refusal to discuss any “reasonable deal” to provide relief to American consumers and businesses afflicted by the pandemic. He goes on to say thought that “despite Congress not acting, because Pelosi and Schumer aren’t willing to sit down and strike a reasonable deal, the president has moved forward with the [executive order] to help people who are still unemployed.” But he goes on to explain that the good news is the House is returning to Washington this week, and “that since Speaker Pelosi is coming back to look at Postal, hopefully she will be more interested in sitting down and negotiating on more stimulus.” He said that “there’s no question that the economic numbers are doing better. So, as we reopen the economy, we see things are getting better.” Mnuchin finishes the interview by saying that “the president wants us to do more. He wants us to provide money for kids and jobs, and a second round of the PPP and direct payments are a clear part of that.” He explains how there’s “a lot of bipartisan support” for adding funds to the Paycheck Protection Program for small businesses and for direct $12000 checks.

Senate Republicans on Tuesday began circulating text of a narrow stimulus relief package that would revive extra unemployment benefits at half the original rate $300/week, shield businesses from lawsuits related to the virus, provide funding for testing and schools, and feature money for the Postal Service.
