At a press conference Friday, Pelosi accused Republicans of playing down the threat the virus posed and denying the results of the election. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called again for negotiations with Republicans on a fiscal-stimulus package, saying the spike in Covid-19 cases is a “red alert,” but the problem is that she didn’t offer any new proposals for a compromise. Yesterday, on Friday Pelosi came out and said that “their focus in the lame duck continues to be on virus relief -- this is a red alert.” And she said that she “urges Republicans to acknowledge the crisis and come to the table to work on stimulus relief.” Big news here though is that even though both democrats and republicans remain divided on a number of issues House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) said Friday things in Congress will be different when President-elect Joe Biden takes the oath of office on Jan. 20. At a news conference on Friday at the capitol, Nancy Pelosi said that “may I remind you that we have a president of the United States, and that that is so very important.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) took to Twitter Thursday night, calling for a “real stimulus package” that extends beyond what has been proposed. He said that “The pandemic is surging, and tens of millions of Americans are facing economic devastation.” Ultimately Sanders explained that “The Senate needs to pass a real stimulus package NOW that provides $2,000 a month to the working class, $600 a week to the unemployed and expands Medicare to all,” the tweet said.

Bottom line is that right now, Democratic lawmakers have demanded a larger stimulus package with more federal help for poorer families and Republicans have insisted there is a focus on liability protections and a smaller more targeted package. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), vice chairman of the Senate appropriations committee, said that “this country is headed for a deadly winter, and it is long past time for us to provide the resources the country needs to get this virus under control and our economy back open.” He explained how legislators face a looming Dec. 11 deadline to avoid a government shutdown and how Republicans in the Senate have already offered a $ trillion proposal to fund the government earlier in the week. Patrick Leahy explained how “These bills do not provide any such relief” and said in a statement on Friday that any final spending agreement would need to include stimulus measures. Unknown is whether those measures will be part of a spending deal or a separate piece of legislation.

The House returns to session next week, with no public schedule for any renewal in stimulus negotiations. Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer Thursday reiterated that their $ trillion proposal needs to be the starting point for talks. And McConnell has advocated for about $500 billion, a top-line number well below the Trump administration’s roughly $ trillion negotiating position before Election Day. Many lawmakers see little likelihood of a deal before President-elect Joe Biden takes office, and with the control of the Senate next year still in question, Democrats have a shot at retaking the upper chamber if they win two runoff races in Georgia on Jan. 5.
